Orphaned Squirrel Runs to Mother’s Pitbull and Asks for Help

An aggressive pitbull has nothing to do with the dog’s temperament and everything to do with its owner.

Unfortunately, pit bulls seem to attract owners who mistreat and abuse them, leading them to gain a bad reputation for being aggressive and hostile towards humans.

But here, we are on a mission to prove that when raised with the love and affection they deserve, pit bulls are actually the sweetest and gentlest dogs you will ever meet.

Take Everly, for example.
Everly lives with her mother, Morgan Joy Groves, and her cat sister, Belle. She loves nothing more than to cuddle with Morgan, and can often be seen following Belle around so the pair can nap together.
At the beginning of lockdown, Everly was enjoying the extra time she was able to spend with her mom when someone else caught her attention.

It was a little squirrel.
The squirrel had shown up during Everly and Morgan’s regular walk, and seemed to take an immediate liking to the gentle pitbull. It seemed the poor little guy no longer had a mommy of his own, and had immediately chosen Everly as his adoptive parent.
Everly seemed surprised by the attention she was getting from this little squirrel, especially when he decided to follow her and Morgan home.

As he lay down on the porch to rest after his walk, the squirrel seemed intent on staying by his side.

The squirrel seemed to miss his mother’s warmth, and climbed right up on top of Everly’s back! The pair fell asleep together, and Morgan snapped the most adorable photo we’ve ever seen in our lives.
As the sun came in, the squirrel was lying on Everly’s back as if he was trying to get a tan. It’s clear that he feels totally at ease with Everly!Belle the cat was very skeptical of the squirrel that now seemed to be part of her family. She was used to chasing squirrels, but she took Everly’s lead and refrained from seeing the child as prey.

As the days went by, Everly began to take her role as a mother more and more seriously. The couple snuggled together for naps, and Morgan saw Everly groom the little squirrel on more than one occasion.

“Everly has such a special talent for always making new friends,” Morgan commented on Instagram.
Did this mean the squirrel was now a permanent addition to the family?

Caring for a squirrel is a lot harder than it seems, and while it would have been heartbreaking to take Everly’s new friend away, Morgan knew he had to do what was best for the little squirrel.

“Our little squirrel friend has been taken to a wildlife center where he will be fed and cared for,” Groves posted on Instagram. “There are two other squirrels his age that he will grow up with and when he is ready, he will be released back into the forest together as a family!”

It’s great that the baby squirrel is getting the proper care he needs and we’re so happy he won’t be alone anymore.
As for Everly, she has her kitty sister to hang out with!
