Curiosity nearly led to tragedy for Winston, a black Cocker Spaniel whose adventurous spirit led him into a harrowing situation underground. While on a walk in Coleville, in north-west Leicestershire, Winston stumbled upon a badger hole – an intricate network of tunnels where badgers live. Fascinated by his discovery, Winston ventured into a hole and fell deep into the earth, unable to find his way out.
Winston’s owner Helen recounted the terrifying experience when she heard her beloved pet barking from downstairs, but was unable to do anything due to legal protections for badgers. For two agonising days they waited for rescue, hoping Winston would get out on his own. Eventually Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, together with the RSPCA, were mobilised to dig through the unstable tunnels and free Winston.
The rescue was fraught with challenges, including the risk of the tunnel collapsing. After hours of careful digging, Winston’s head emerged from the rubble, sparking immense relief and joy. Despite being hungry and weak, Winston miraculously emerged unharmed.
Following his ordeal, Winston received extensive care, including a veterinary check-up to ensure he suffered no health consequences from his underground misadventure. Thankfully, he emerged parasite-free and on the road to recovery.
Winston’s escape serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of animal behavior and the dedication of rescue teams who brave difficult conditions to save lives. Helen, thrilled to have her companion safely back, is now keeping a closer eye on Winston, grateful for her second chance and hoping he’ll think twice about exploring such dangerous places again.
