Patricia Reyes was driving to work in Corpus Christi, Texas, when she came across a group of hungry, overheated puppies on the side of the road on a scorching hot day.

He was incontinently driving his car around to help the poor puppies. He tried to feed one of them a sandwich and give her some water, but she didn’t want anything more.

Reyes posted about the animals on Facebook, in an effort to get them some help.

Elizabeth Lilly, who has been a canine helper for 20 years, saw Reyes’ Facebook post and agreed to help.

A puppy who was alive when Lilly was coming had failed before she got there. The puppy, whom Lilly called Ainsley, had crawled into a shelf and curled up inside seeking comfort she had never known. She even put her head on the shelf and failed.

His family, Aline, collapsed next to a garbage bag, as if looking for food.

The surviving puppy was in a bad situation and needed immediate medical attention. Lilly put him in her car and drove her to PeeWees Veterinary Sanatorium.

Lilly kept hugging her and telling her to hold on and fight. Her head fell back and her eyes didn’t narrow and she looked like she was out of breath several times, but she kept going back and didn’t give up.

She decided to name this dog Grace.

Thanks to her rescuers and an amazing veterinary staff, Grace is getting better every day. She will be going to a rescue next week, where she will be available for abandonment.

“I thought we had a spur-of-the-moment problem; we don’t,” Lilly told 3 News. “We have a humanity problem.”

“It shouldn’t be an option to leave them on the side of the road in a community with the coffers we have now,” Lilly continued. “There are several rescues that will take them, if you give them a chance.”

Lily has since cremated Ainsley and Aline and has their remains in a special place with the rest of her deliveries that she couldn’t save.
