When you bring a dog home, you think about the obligation to take care of it. Unfortunately, some people forget that duty or face situations where they just can’t take care of their pet. Besides many times, the companion dog is the one to experiment.
Standard care, such as deworming and flea and tick prevention, become part of maintaining a healthy and balanced canine friend. Yet, when a dog named Belle was discovered in South Africa, she was in very poor condition. It seemed as if no person had actually taken care of Belle for a long period of time.
When someone from Area Led Pet Welfare, or CLAW, found Belle, she was covered in bumps. Upon closer inspection, rescuers discovered that these bumps were actually ticks, hundreds of them. Belle was so covered in them that she didn’t even look like a dog.
The ticks were gathered around Belle’s eyes and ears and were also feeding on her blood. The ticks had eaten so much of Belle’s blood that she was anemic and could not walk. CLAW volunteers quickly rushed Belle to the vet to get the care she needed.
The problem was that Belle had so many ticks on her that removing them one by one would surely cause her to shed too much blood. Instead, the vet used strong anti-parasitic drugs to paralyze the ticks, then they simply decreased Belle. It is fast and also reliable.
After removing the ticks, the vet had to change the nutrients that Belle had actually lost because she was malnourished.
Belle finally began to feel much better. She once again resembled a normal pet and even pleased a female who decided to adopt her and provide her with a permanent home. Although Belle was close to death when she was rescued, today she is more than happy, healthy and balanced and in a caring residence.
