I looked into her eyes and it seemed like she had given up, but she had little chance of being saved.

The 14-year-old black Lab mix with a gray face sat in a kennel at Dallas Animal Services with a confused look on his face.

Her shelter card revealed some of her sad past. It said her former owner had dropped her off at the shelter just after Thanksgiving and asked for her to be put down.

The poor dog was incredibly skinny and had trouble walking. She only had two teeth and was heartworm positive.

Rescuers and animal lovers heard about the dog and began posting about her on social media.
And when Tommy Bull of Crowley, Texas, read about the dog, he was stunned.

“I looked into her eyes and it looked like she had given up,” Bull told The Dodo. “She was a black, older, heartworm-positive dog; she had little chance of being saved. The holidays are one of the worst times of the year for dogs, so many people turn them in to shelters.”

Bull contacted CAMO Rescue, who arranged for him to pick up the dog from the shelter. “The workers brought her to me because she was a little wobbly,” he said. “I grabbed her and hugged her tight. I wanted her to know she was safe. I fell in love with her instantly.”

He took her to the car and drove her home, where Bull’s wife immediately bonded with her. They named her Ettie, short for Henrietta. “We paid a lot of attention to her and introduced her to our other rescue dogs, and she had no problems,” Bull said.

The older girl blossomed in the Bulls’ home. They fed her nutritious canned food that was easy for her to eat and she gained weight. Ettie also began treatment for her arthritis and treatment for her heartworms.
