CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is welcoming a baby gorilla looking to join the pack!
Jameela, the 11-week-old western lowland gorilla, will be heading to Cleveland from the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas, according to the Metroparks.
Zoo officials say the move was made in the hopes that a Metroparks adult female gorilla will step in as a foster mother to the baby.
Jameela was born in January in an emergency cesarean after life-threatening complications threatened the health of her mother, zoo officials say.
The infant’s mother, Sekani and other female gorillas at Fort Worth Zoo did not show maternal behaviors for a successful bond, according to the Fort Worth Zoo.
Zookeepers attempted to introduce Jameela to the Fort Worth Zoo’s gorilla troop, but ultimately decided her next best step is a move to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo where effort will be made to integrate her into their troop, zoo officials say.
“We are grateful to the incredible Fort Worth team who have dedicated around-the-clock care to Jameela since her birth,” said Mike Fouraker, executive director of the Fort Worth Zoo. “She is now a healthy 8-pound infant gorilla and we look forward to watching her journey continue in Cleveland.”
Jameela is anticipated to arrive next week, the zoo says.
